It's that time of the year again.

It's that time of the year again when all the 'bugs' are in the air. I remember our first autumn in the UK, the kids seemed to be 'constantly' sick. Especially our youngest son who had just turned 5, he seemed to catch anything that was doing the rounds.

We kept him at home a lot because we didn't think that it was fair to send him to school, not just for him but towards the other kids. It didn't take long before I noticed that there were always sick kids in his classroom so I approached the teacher about the subject. Not in an aggressive way or anything but just to ask how 'things are done' at the school with regard to deciding when a kid is too sick to attend school. The teacher assured me that he wished all parents were like me but the fact was that the kids came to school unless they had a temperature or couldn't stand up straight. I was a little surprised by this as I feel that kids coughing and splurting their bugs all over should be kept at home but 'when in Rome....'.

The second autumn was far better. By this year we had all built up our immune systems and the kids in particular were a lot stronger.

And here we are again, third year around. It's been quite hectic this year although the boys have not been sick yet (touch wood). But it's been a tiring month with baby, granpa, me and now hubby getting ill. to top it off our little English rose is on her second round (first time it was croup). It's wonderful having a big family but one of the drawbacks is that when it's 'sick time' it's like a never ending wave - it just keeps coming.

One thing I do miss about South Africa (and I realize it's not necessarily a good thing) is most doctors generosity when it comes to antibiotics. What I would give right now for that million dollar signature to get hold of those blessed evil antibiotics and just make everybody better 'one time'!

They may seem like magic muti, but it's never good to over-indulge in antibiotics, otherwise your body just builds up an immunity, and then you need stronger and stronger meds just to tackle what would be a minor ailment!

How about giving them some vitamin C? They make those lovely effervescent tablet drinks that have plenty of fizz.

Yes, you are right Helga. I just get tired and the brain goes fuzzy sometimes.

The boys take those fizzie vitamins and they obviously do them good coz the boys haven't been sick yet this year.

MMm. I agree with you there. I've had my share of sickness during the years, since I've low resistance against bugs!

Sick persons, whether it's kids or adults, should stay at home. Not spread the bugs all over. No wonder we have so many sickness nowadays. I also wonder how this affect the kids life further on, if it's tearing down their bodies in some sort. Making them aging earlier? Other defects? It can't be healthy to go around with fever in the body.

One research they did on daycare centers was that they didn't watch that the kids were washing their hands properly and often enough. Once they tried to approach this, with handwashing + wiping the tables, chairs and toys with disinfection stuff, the bugs decreased with so many percentages to almost nothing. Such a small effort gave such a big result. It's very interesting.

Very often a family have kids in different ages and I wonder if not many of the bugs comes from the daycare centers and is spread further onto the school kids.

There are usually so many kids (at least here in Sweden) at the same daycare center and so few of the staff, so they don't have the time to take care properly of this. Not the hygiene and not the sick kids.

It's a pity, because I feel sorry for the kids that is the victims. No fun to be sick so often.
